In Honour of the Mums Left Out of Candid Family Portraits

mother's day

Have you ever noticed that mums seem to be the ones left out of most candid family portraits? Whether everyone is gathered for a holiday, birthday celebration, or another event, it is important to make sure that a few of those quick snapshots include mum, too! This post also serves as a reminder that Mother’s Day is just around the corner, on 8 May, and organising a photo shoot is the perfect gift. Keep scrolling to learn more about booking a photo session to celebrate your mum or wife.

Bring Everyone Together

There are many different ways to describe a family. Perhaps it is just the two of you, or the two of you and your beloved pet. Do you have one or two small children or several grown children and your grandchildren? Do you have parents or extended relatives coming in town to visit soon? Photo shoots are a great way to gather everyone together and celebrate your unique bond. Sessions are casual, fun, and extremely memorable, making them an activity everyone will enjoy. Plus, bringing all the children or siblings together is a great way to show your mum how much you care about one another and demonstrate your appreciation for her.

Let Me Take the Lead

Mums tend to have multiple to-do lists and often have to organise events for everyone else. Booking a photo session with me means letting her take it easy for the day. She does not need to organise the shots or worry about poses, because you can leave everything to me. I can coax great smiles out of everyone, even the shyest or most unwilling of participants. I will also coordinate with you directly about time, location, and even outfit suggestions if you want. Putting a bit of an effort into organising a session on her behalf will go a long way toward showing her how you care!

Candid Family Portraits: Types of Shots

By now, you may be imagining your children or siblings all gathered on the beach, either running about or nervously waiting for instruction. The goal is to relax and enjoy, so trust that I will get a great combination of shots. Let me know if there are specific shots you would like, such as a big group shot, a picture of mum with each child individually, or a shot of her and her spouse or partner. I love capturing spontaneous smiles and interactions as well as planned, beautifully composed lifestyle portraits.

Ask for Framing Assistance

Although the session itself will be a blast, half of the fun is seeing the resulting images. I can help you choose prints, and even offer advice about matting and framing. There are many different ways to gift and display your favourite images, including:

  • A trio of prints
  • Different images and frames for home and work
  • Multiple sets of images so everyone gets them
  • Different sets of prints for two or more rooms, complete with coordinating frames

In addition to adding to your home’s beautiful décor, mats and frames will help protect your precious images over time.

Why Go Professional?

Let’s say you suggested the idea of booking a photo shoot to one of your siblings, who quickly shot it down. After all, couldn’t you set up your iPhone on a stand with a timer and gather for a group shot? In reality, the difference between an at-home and a professional photo shoot is astounding. The right equipment and understanding of balance, lighting, composition, and editing makes all the difference in creating stunning images you will want to display.

It is also an investment of time that will richly pay off, as you will spend quality time with your mum and have much more to show for it than a few blurry or off-centre images. The resulting prints from a professional photo session will be cherished for years to come, and looking back on them will only remind you of the fun time you spend together.

Give a Gift Mum Will Love

My photo sessions include a mix of formal and candid family portraits, capturing your connection, relationships, and bond. I can guide you through every step of the process, from choosing a location and the best time of day to suggesting clothing choices and framing options. We may not be able to schedule your shoot before Mother’s Day this year, but you can give your mum a gift certificate and talk to her about possible session dates! Contact me today to learn more.

How You Can Get Great Candid Family Photographs

Sept36Candid photos – these are some of the best pictures aren’t they? They capture everyone in the moment, creating gorgeous photographic memories.

Candids can capture everyone laughing, all the fun they’re having, and you might even like candids of yourself. I love taking candid family photographs for my clients because each and every photo is truly unique and absolutely gorgeous.

Just how can you get amazing candid family photographs? I am going to take a look!

4 Awesome Tips for Candid Family Photographs

Don’t worry – it isn’t near as hard as you may think to get beautiful, perfect candid photos.

  1. Let Your Family Dress Comfortably for the Photos

When you prepare for your session, one of the things you’ll need to consider is how to dress. While you’ll want to look great in the photos, you should always make sure the clothing choices are comfortable.

This is what can really help capture gorgeous candid family photographs because the more relaxed everyone is, the more they will laugh. Relaxed, happy people will have a grand time when it comes to capturing candids.

  1. Go to a Favourite Location – the Beach, a Park, Somewhere Fun

Another perfect way to help everyone be relaxed is to go to a favourite location. This can be a park, the beach, or anywhere else your family loves.

You will all be able to enjoy yourselves, which gives me the perfect opportunity to capture everyone laughing, playing, and having a grand time.

How splendid is it to sit in your favourite park with your children, and simply have an amazing time together? Pure bliss.

  1. Bring Along Your Family Pets, Especially Dogs

Animals are perfect when it comes to family portraits, and they add a great touch to candid family photographs. When you bring along you family pet, you and your children will have such a fun time and the candids will be gorgeous.

While including pets in your photographs is great for candid family photography, it is also a perfect way to encourage reluctant children and teens to enjoy the session. And don’t worry; you can have any family pet that is dear to you, not just a pup.

  1. Get to Know Your Photographer

I love to get to know my clients before a photo session to ensure everyone is at ease with the process. This is a perfect way to get candid family photographs because the more you know your photographer, the more relaxed you will be.

All you need to do is simply call and set up your session and we can chat together. This will help us get to know each other while also ensuring I know exactly what you want for your family photos.

3 Tips for Capturing Great Candid Shots

lets-play-ballMost of us don’t need to be told how charming a really great candid shot can be. After all, candids really do capture people in the best possible light. Their spirit really shines through in a way that shows up perfectly on film. Candids help to preserve precious details of the beauty of daily life as well. They’re simply magical in a way that really can’t be planned.

However, even though candids are by definition spontaneous and unplanned in nature, there are certainly still ways you can make sure that your candid photos are extra special every single time. Give these tips and tricks a try for yourself today. You’ll be noticing a difference in the quality of your shots before you know it.

Always have your camera at the ready for those candid shots

Capturing the best candid shots isn’t so much about orchestrating the perfect situations so much as it’s about being ready when they happen on their own. That means always having your camera ready to go when you find yourself face to face with the perfect photo op.

Get in the habit of taking your camera with you when you go out. When you’re at home, keep your camera out and ready to go in rooms where you naturally spend a lot of time. The more “ready-to-go” your camera is at a given time, the more likely you’ll be to successfully capture life’s most fantastic moments before they’re gone forever.

Learn to really see life as it unfolds.

Sometimes the most special moments in life aren’t going to be the biggest ones or the ones that happen on special occasions. Great candid photographers know that every single day is packed with precious moments that you’ll want to remember someday. All you need to do is learn how to become more aware and spot them for what they are as they’re happening.

Silly expressions, tender moments between loved ones, the way the sun reflects off of your child’s hair while she’s playing – all of these things and more consist of the very stuff wonderful memories are made of. Make it a point to look up and look around more often. You’re sure to see things differently before long.

Learn to be patient.

Some of the most amazing candids I’ve ever captured wouldn’t have happened at all if I weren’t willing to be patient. Relax and let moments happen naturally. Resist the urge to get directly involved in whatever scene you’re trying to capture. Learn to hang back and quietly observe instead. I promise that sooner or later the moment will just happen… and you will know it when you see it. Your job is to simply be ready with your camera.

This is especially important when it comes to getting great photographs of children or animals. Their true essence and spirit comes out in a way that can be accurately captured when they’re simply allowed to be themselves and do their thing. Try it for yourself and you’ll quickly see what I mean!
