You’ve seen them all around and are probably wondering if beach photography is something you and your family should do. I love beach photography and I think the photographs are absolutely stunning in the end. However, I always make sure that my clients understand that beach photography not only has some great pros, but there are also a few cons to consider. I am going to take a look at some of these to help you make your decision for your next session!
Pro: Gorgeous Lighting With Beach Photography
One of the best things about beach photography is the lighting. I love to take photos before sunset to capture a gorgeous light that will look simply magical in the end. Usually, the best time to do this is about an hour to an hour and a half before sunset, and I am able to capture some gorgeous shots. It looks stunning with the pre-sunset light, the waves rolling in the background, and your happy, relaxed smiles.
Con: Summer Might Not Work For Young Kids
Taking the lighting into consideration does have one con; young kids might not be able to do this so late in the evening in the summer. The sun sets quite late, making it difficult for families with young children to get beach portraits at the late time because the kids are getting tired. This is why I suggest winter photographs for people with young families, and also because you won’t be sweating in a winter portrait like you might in the summer!
Pro: Easy, Relaxed, Happy Portraits
The great thing about going to the beach is that you are always happy and relaxed. The beach seems to wave a magic wand over everyone, making you all joyful and peaceful. You’ll hear the waves in the background and just laugh and laugh, with the wind blowing through your hair and playing in the sand with your children. In fact, if your children happen to be tired and cranky, the beach does seem to work magic on them, as well. When they’re at the beach, they get to play in the sand and just have fun, which is what many kids love.
Con: Temperamental Weather
A con that many people face with beach photography is that the weather can be temperamental or they don’t want the wind to mess up their hair. If you are someone who likes your fringe a certain way, then beach photography might not be for you. In addition, there is always a chance of rain. Many people think we have to cancel, but the dark, stormy clouds can be perfect for photography if we get in the perfect gap. I never photograph people in direct sunlight because they will squint and not look happy, and rain clouds give a gorgeous coverage, adding a fairy tale light to your portraits.
