Why Professional Family Photographs Are for You

3 Excellent Reasons to Stop Procrastinating and Get Family Photographs

portrait photographyAs mums, we all can have a rough time getting family photographs taken. There is always something going on that we need to be part of, and a lot of times we don’t always feel up to getting portraits taken. However, as a mum, I fully believe that family photographs are absolutely important and I think we should all stop procrastinating and get excellent photographs we will adore. Family photograph sessions can be absolutely enjoyable and you will definitely find that you will have an incredible time making memories with your family. I want to take a look at just why you need to stop procrastinating and get gorgeous family photographs, today!

3 Amazing Reasons You Should Get Professional Family Photographs

There are many reasons why you should get photos of your family, but I am going to look at the top reasons I believe you need them. These are great reasons, and, in the end, you will be absolutely thrilled that you decided to get family photographs taken – trust me.

  1. Mums Can Always be Part of the Family Photographs

When it comes time to take photographs at birthday parties, days out to the beach or park, or any other amazing event, mums are often left out of the photos. This is because we are usually behind the camera getting great snaps of our children, but this means that one day you will realise you aren’t in many if any, photos. You don’t want this to happen, and you want your children to be able to have excellent photos with their entire family. When you get family photographs, you have the chance to be in the photos with everyone, creating long-lasting memories that everyone will cherish.

  1. You Want to Capture the Memories as They Are Happening

Catching memories as they happen is another excellent reason for family photography. You don’t want to wait until such-and-such happens because you will miss out on some amazing opportunities. A great thing that many of my clients do is get yearly photographs of them with their children, capturing everyone’s style at the moment (which is always fun to look back at). Having yearly portraits taken will also capture the growth of all the little ones in your family, which is amazing to look back on when they are all grown up.

  1. Professional Photography Helps Capture Everyone in the Best Light

One reason many mums give for not wanting to be in photos is that they don’t like how they look when the photos are developed or put on the computer. However, the main reason for this is because the person is taking photos on their own camera without any professional photo experience. Getting professional family photographs is a great way to capture everyone in the best light, and you will be so relaxed and happy that you will love how the photos turn out.

Stop Procrastinating and Get Stunning Portraits!

Now is the time to stop procrastinating and get gorgeous family photographs that you will adore. Simply give me a call and we can chat about everything you’d like to see in your photos. I can even give you tips for them making sure your portraits turn out exactly how you want them to.

The Best Portrait Framing Projects for Your Family Photographs

black-white-family-portraitI often tell my clients that one of the best ways to ensure their photos are safe is to get them all framed. There are so many incredible and unique ideas out there that are perfect for family photographs. I am going to share a few of my favourite ideas that I’ve come across when working with other amazing clients. Let’s take a look at some beautiful ideas for portrait framing projects that I think are absolutely stunning.

3 Portrait Framing Project Ideas

You can use these ideas as great inspiration for your portrait framing projects, creating unique, stunning frames for your family portraits.

  1. Gorgeous Antique Frames for Your Family Photographs

One of my clients had a great family photo session that incorporated the majority of their family. It was a wonderful family reunion and made for some stunning photographs. Before the session, they found some gorgeous antique frames in an antique shop that they wanted to use to frame their photos. We decided to do a photo session that had a vintage, antique flair to it, making the portraits look like older photographs. This was a fun time for everyone, and it created something absolutely gorgeous when added to the antique frames. What a great, fun idea! You too can find great old frames when you go antique shopping. The great thing is, antiques are always so unique, no matter what.

  1. Portrait Framing Projects: Use Old Windows

Another gorgeous idea one of my clients had was using old windows, some that even had stain glass still in them. This was such a great idea and was perfect for up-cycling materials. They had many different photos that they put into these windows, and it created a gorgeous, unique portrait framing project. You can do this with any windows you may have and you can even go to shops to find old windows that you can use if you’d like something similar.

  1. Work with Kids to Create Beautiful Unique Frames for Their Portraits

When doing portrait framing projects, one great idea is to have your kids decorate frames to make them truly one-of-a-kind. You can buy frames that are the size you want, and pick up craft supplies and have your kids decorate the frames however they want. This will create a picture frame that will be perfect to have your family portrait in or even just portraits of your children. You will love the frames because they will have such a great memory attached, and your kids will feel proud when they see their creation up on the walls of the house.

Frame Your Photos to Keep Them Lasting the Ages!

Once you have chosen various portrait framing projects, then contact me! We can work to create photos that will fit perfectly with those frames, and I can give you suggestions on which framer to use. They will be sent off and come back to you look gorgeous and ready to be hung up on your walls. This will not only make your family photographs look great, but will also keep them safe for many years.

Recreating Old Family Photographs: Keeping Tradition Alive

black-white-photographyRecreating old family photographs is an incredible trend that many people enjoy doing. It can be done in a hilarious fashion, as I’m sure you’ve seen with some of the viral photos going around. However, recreating old family photographs can also be the perfect way to capture the past with newer family members, creating long lasting memories to go with the existing ones. This is something I love doing for my clients. I’ve had several opportunities from posing children the same way their mum and her siblings were posed at their ages to capturing the similarities of old black and white photographs throughout multiple generations in newer portraits. Let’s take a look at why recreating old family photographs is such a wonderful idea for you and your family!

  1. You Will See How Things Change, Yet Stay the Same

When you recreate old photos, you will get the chance to see some amazing changes of those in your family, and even amongst the scenery if taken in the same place. This is incredibly amazing because you may not realize just how much has changed; it is a wonderful thing to see! However, you will also get the chance to see just how many things stayed the same or even see how your children look just like your mother or father, or even great-grandparents when they were children. It is incredible how much changes, as well as how much things don’t throughout the years.

  1. It Forms a Great Tradition for Your Family

Many families used to have the tradition of getting photographs of their children at certain ages, which makes it perfect for you to continue. This gives you the chance to see your whole family lined up at the same age and can create a great collection. I had one client that had amazing hand-coloured black and white photographs of her family at certain ages throughout the years. These were absolutely stunning, and she wanted to recreate this tradition as best as possible. It worked out gorgeously, which made a great addition to her older photographs.

  1. Recreating Old Photographs Produces Gorgeous Photos for Collections

In the digital age, we are moving away from having stunning photo collections. This will be tragic for future generations because they will not have the same access to old family photographs like we do now. When recreating old family photographs, you are making sure that your family has physical copies of photos to add to collections. This creates something that will live on for generations, and won’t be lost to the digital age.

Recreating old family photographs is a great way to keep memories alive and make new ones with your family. If you have favourite photos you would like to recreate, simply give me a call and we can chat about them and what you want. We can go to similar locations if the photos were taken in the Brisbane area, and we can do our best to recreate the scene! Take this opportunity to create new memories along with your existing ones.

How to Get Gorgeous Family Photographs with Your Adorable Pets

Sept19Pet photography is a great way to get gorgeous family photographs that everyone will love. It is a perfect way to get everyone to relax while you are getting photographs taken, with zero fake smiles! When you bring along your pets, you will even notice that reluctant teenagers are more willing to get their portraits taken if their favourite pet is with them. I am going to take a quick look at how you can get gorgeous family photographs with pets to create the best memories for you and your family for years to come!

You Can Bring Any Pet

When it comes to getting photographs with your pets, many people assume you can only get photographs with dogs. However, I love taking photographs of all different types of pets. I had one client who brought his pet rats with him to the shoot and I was able to get some simply stunning photos of him with the rats. It was quite fun carrying around the rat cage and taking these gorgeous photos. In fact, my client called me a few years later and said that he appreciated the photographs because both of his pet rats passed away. The photographs were a great way to remember them. Having your favourite pet, no matter what it is, is a great way to have the best, most relaxed photograph session while creating wonderful, long-lasting memories.

Photograph Cats in Your Own Home

Cats are some of the hardest pets to photograph. Unless they are well trained, you can’t take them out to a park or the beach. Instead, I always suggest getting gorgeous family photographs with you cats at your home. I can capture some stunning and fun images while you are able to relax in the comfort of your own home. However, if your cat is well trained, I will gladly take photographs of them wherever you’d like to go.

Let Your Dogs Run and Play Before the Photographs

Of course, dogs are the easiest and most popular pets to have in your family photographs. I always suggest that young, energetic dogs should have time to run around and play before the session. This will help to keep the session stress-free. A great way to do this is to get to the location a bit before the session starts to let your dog run and play. This will help you get gorgeous family photographs because your dog will be more willing to sit still for a photograph and not want to chase and play with everything it sees.

Do you want to get gorgeous family photographs with your favourite pets? Then call and we can chat about your session! Let me know which pet(s) you would like to get photographs of and with, and we can arrange the perfect location and time. This is a great way to capture long-lasting memories, keeping the memory of your adorable pets alive for you to pass down generation to generation. Call me today, and we can work out something absolutely amazing.

The Top 3 Tips to Feel Beautiful in Photographs

Sept55Taking photographs is an absolutely wonderful idea for everyone and their families. However, many times, I notice that several people are afraid because they don’t feel beautiful in photographs. It is important to you and me that you feel beautiful in portraits because I know how much you will love to get great family photographs and cherish those memories. I am going to talk about how you can easily accomplish this, capturing long-lasting memories that I am sure you will adore throughout the years!

1. Professional Photographs – Know What to Hide

A great way to feel beautiful in photographs is to get portraits taken by a professional photographer such as myself. Not only do we have the eye for great photographs, but we also know what to hide and can easily do this with posing and other tricks. Knowing the major things that people want to hide helps my clients feel relaxed throughout the session, and it always produces excellent memories that you will be proud to hang on your wall.

2. Wear Clothes that Suit You.

Wearing certain clothes are a great way to feel beautiful in photographs and different styles can help with various issues. Let me show you a few styles that are easy to find and affordable that can easily help you feel great!

  • V-Neck Shirts: These help to slim us down in photographs, and also helps to give the illusion that we are taller. If looking slimmer and taller in photographs is something you want, simply choose a lovely white V-neck. You can easily find these at most stores, and many are very affordable!
  • Three-quarter Length Sleeves: These help your arms look great and can easily make your arms look slimmer if you wear shirts with tighter arms. Don’t go too tight though! These shirts are perfect if the day is cooler, but you can always rock these shirts in the summer depending on the material.
  • Scarves are Excellent: As we age, many of us aren’t the biggest fans of our necks. Because of this, scarves are a great accessory and are perfect to feel beautiful in photographs. Find a nice, light scarf that matches your outfit to have a lovely ensemble that will help you relax, as well as look and feel gorgeous!

3. Lean Forward to Look Relaxed and Feel Beautiful in Photographs

One last suggestion I give my clients is that leaning forward is a perfect way to look and feel beautiful in photographs. This helps to slim your arms down, and also helps lengthen your neck. Many times, when people are staring up at the camera, their faces look radiant and gorgeous!

You may have different things that you dislike about your body, and I want to tell you to feel free to talk to me about these. My goal is to make sure you always feel beautiful in photographs, and I am willing to help however I can. Don’t feel embarrassed – we all have things we’d like to hide! Contact me today and we can chat about your session and get some gorgeous shots of you and your family.

Keeping Your Portraits Safe: Protecting Photographs

finished productI was chatting to a father after we took some portraits, and he was telling me the history of his family. While we were talking, he pulled out the most beautiful old photographs of his family. They were simply stunning. I really enjoy old photographs and seeing a family’s history preserved on film. Old family portraits are something I believe everyone enjoys as well, but you might not be thinking about keeping your photographs around for a hundred or so years. I think protecting your photographs is absolutely important for your family, and I am going to look at three ways you can do this with your own!

1. Keep Your Photographs in an Area with Low Temperatures and Humidity

If it is possible, you should keep your portraits in an area with lower temperatures and humidity. A great place for this would be a room that doesn’t have windows facing the rising or setting sun and if you can keep it temperature controlled. You can also add handy dehumidifiers to the room, which I think is a great idea to help keep your portraits safe. This will help keep your photographs around for a very long time, which means 60, 70, even 100 years later, your family members can show a photographer like myself your photographs, creating a great opportunity for everyone. What an incredible piece of history to have!

 2. Protecting Photographs By Framing Them or Putting Them in Photo Books

I love helping my clients find and select the best frames for their portraits. Frames are gorgeous and are very important when protecting photographs. The reason I like to help my clients pick out a frame and framer is that this will ensure the frame is absolutely right for the family while also protecting the images. A store-bought one might not do the trick! You should also consider getting lovely photo books of your portraits. This is an excellent way for protecting photographs and allows your friends and other family members to flip through your pictures and see your family’s story unfold.

 3. Store Photographs in Photo Boxes, Not Cardboard

If you are not framing all of your photographs or are moving older ones out of frames, then you must always make sure you put them in a great box for it. Many people think that simply storing their photographs in a cardboard box is enough, and I believe the best way is to choose a photo box lined and crafted expertly for protecting photographs. I can help you find the best boxes for your portraits and ensure everything stays safe for decades! This can even help keep your other, 100-year-old family portraits safe for many more years.

Protecting photographs is something I cherish quite a bit! I would love to take your family portraits and also give you tips and tricks on proper storage and care of these images. Contact me today, and we can chat about your session, any old photographs you have of your family, and how to keep everything safe. I would love to chat and get to know you and your history!

3 Ways to Protect Your Portraits

Rainy Day Portraits: Reschedule Or Have An Adventure?

Rainy Day PortraitsWeather is a major factor when it comes to scheduling outdoor family sessions. Many times, I have clients who will call me and wonder if we should reschedule because the forecast says that it is going to be raining in Brisbane, or at least have an 80% chance of rain. Something that I have noticed is that our forecasts aren’t always spot on! In fact, while it might be raining in one part of Brisbane, it might not be raining in another location. I am going to take a look at how rainy day portraits can be fun, whether or not you should reschedule, and the perks you can experience with your rainy day portraits.

Should You Reschedule?

Ah, the question everyone has when the forecast predicts rain or if you look out you window, seeing water pour from the sky! You can always reschedule, but something I’ve experienced is that I have only had to reschedule two or three times in the last few years due to the weather. That’s because the weather is quite fickle here, but also because rainy day portraits add a gorgeous glow to photographs that the sun just cannot add. As I said, you can always reschedule if you feel that it will throw off your portraits, especially if you have wavy or curly hair, and plan to straighten your hair for the portraits. (In fact, that is one of the only cons to rainy day portraits that I’ve experienced.)

Perks Of Rainy Day Portraits

Rainy day portraits have several great perks that I think you will love, which is why you should consider whether or not you really should reschedule. One of the best things about rainy day portraits is that the light is simply magical. It fills up all of the shadows, you won’t be squinting in the harsh sunlight, and there is just this magnificent glow that fills up the area. I love how rainy day portraits turn out; the lighting is so natural and beautiful.

Another great perk of rainy day portraits is they are a great way to help your kids relax, have fun, and be themselves. Kids aren’t too keen on portrait sessions that are overly serious, and rainy day portraits are anything but serious. Your kids can play around in puddles, or run around in the light sprinkles. When a droplet of water lands on their face, they’ll laugh and laugh, giving a gorgeous natural smile that they might not have given in a serious session. Now, you don’t always have to allow your kids to play in puddles, but a rainy day just adds such a great element to a relaxing session.

Until Next Time

If you don’t want to be outside during a few sprinkles, or need to find another location, I can work with you to find the perfect place. I understand that there are times where you have to have your portraits on a certain day, and I will work to help you out! Never be afraid to call and chat with me about your portraits and how we can either turn your family photographs into gorgeous rainy day portraits, or if we can find another, wonderful location. Contact me today for your next family portrait session!

Three Must Have Family Portrait Ideas

Lifestyle Portraits: Taking Photographs on Your Boat

Sept26This might surprise you, but boats are absolutely perfect for incredible lifestyle portraits for you and your family. Boats make gorgeous scene setters and can make wonderful backdrops, as well. Your family and I can take an adventure all around the area finding locations that are amazingly unique for your family portraits, and you can simply have a grand time laughing and relaxing. Bring those fishing poles and beer (if you like it), and we can have a great time taking photographs on your boat!

Clients Have Had Excellent Portraits on Boats

You might be wondering if taking photographs on your boat is something that is possible or that will look wonderful; it is very much possible! One of the best things about taking photographs on your boat is that the location possibilities are endless. I’ve joined clients as they have gone down the Brisbane River to the Kangaroo Point Cliffs, and taking gorgeous photographs beneath the Story Bridge or along to Yeronga. These photographs are absolutely stunning, and it makes for such a fun adventure for clients, and even myself! I’ve had a client who owned a boat that they used for their family reunion portraits and another client who had a houseboat that they took around to the estuaries of the Gold Coast. We sailed to different islands and took some simply gorgeous photographs that they now have hanging in their home in the city. These photographs are a source of pride and joy for my clients, and are memories they will have forever.

Taking Photographs on Your Boat Is a Wonderful Time to Be Relaxed

Taking photographs on your boat gives you and your family the excellent chance to be relaxed and enjoy your time by wearing your favourite comfortable clothes, sitting back on your boat and chatting with each other, as well as visiting your favourite locations. As with one of my clients mentioned above, you can turn these lifestyle portraits into a perfect family reunion portrait opportunity by having your whole family join us. This particular client happened to be great-grandparents; they brought their children, their grandchildren, and their great-grandchildren and captured a gorgeous, historic event that everyone enjoyed. It sure was a great chance for the family to enjoy spending time with each other, make memories, and just laugh and laugh throughout the day.

Until Next Time

If you have a gorgeous boat that you would love to get portraits on or with, then contact me. We can chat about the various locations you would like to visit on your boat, as well as the different shots you would like to have. I will sail on your boat with you, but I can hop ashore to take photographs of you on your boat, or you can join me, and I will take photographs with the boat in the background. Any ideas you have, let me know, and I will make this moment a magical one for you and your family.

How to Feel Beautiful in Photographs

Lifestyle Portraits for Couples

Why Should You Get Winter Portraits?

family portraitThe winter months have just come to a close, but they’re still great for portraits. I’m going to touch on what I like about them. Here in Queensland, winter can either last a few months or just one or two weeks, but we find it an immense relief from the heat, as well as the perfect chance for photographs. I love taking winter portraits. I am going to give a few reasons why waiting for Spring or Summer portraits isn’t always necessary.

1. You Will Not Have To Rush At Christmas time

I know that many of my clients want to get family portraits for Christmas to give out to friends and family members. Many times, you might find yourself in a rush to get portraits taken because you will be busy, and suddenly November shows up giving you only a few weeks to get portraits taken, printed, framed, and wrapped. Winter portraits allow you to take great Christmas portraits where you are not sweating or uncomfortable, while also giving you the ability to get the portraits all finished in time to give as Christmas presents.

2. The Parks Will Be Empty

One of the great things about winter portraits is that you can go to any park, and we can take photographs in any location because the parks will be empty. Hardly anyone goes to parks in the winter months, which gives you the ability to simply drive up to a location, get out, take photographs, and drive to another area. No need for prams either, because of being able to drive straight to your chosen location. I have been able to take some stunning shots of families while at empty parks. I once found a gorgeous fig tree for a family to take a photograph in; the tree had a split down the middle that was perfect for lighting, as well as keeping them out of the chilly wind. It turned out to be a magical portrait.

3. You Will Have A More Open Schedule

Winter can be busy, but nowhere near as busy as spring and summer. You might find that you have more weekends that are open right now, whereas once spring hits, you will have five things popup suddenly. This makes it difficult to get your portraits taken and is the main reason you will find yourself pushing them off until November. When you realise you have a free weekend or two coming up, it is time to schedule winter portraits!

In Closing, Winter Portraits Are Perfect..

If you want to get your portraits taken in the winter months, contact me and we can figure out some excellent spots for the photographs. You will feel really relieved that you can get your portraits taken before the busy spring and summer hit. Winter portraits have their own touch of beauty and magic that is different to spring or summer. I promise, you will love how these portraits turn out. It’s always a good idea to book in the first free moment you have, no matter what season, as life has a habit of filling up any gaps. Before you know it 10 years have passed !!
